Interpersonal Mindfulness Program (IMP) Teacher Training

The Interpersonal Mindfulness Program (IMP) Teacher Training is a structured development pathway for experienced mindfulness teachers wishing to deepen their practice and capacity to teach interpersonal mindfulness.

The training unfolds in four interconnected stages:

1. Preparation

Participants meet established prerequisites, including a personal meditation practice, silent and Insight Dialogue retreat experience, completion of an 8-week IMP course, and professional training and teaching experience in MBSR/MBCT (or equivalent).

2. Engagement

The in-person 9-day training includes an immersive retreat environment with time for silence, relational practice, and interactive small-group learning focused on teaching presence and the IMP meditation guidelines.

3. Support and Continuity

Ongoing learning includes:

  • A two-day live online workshop

  • Eight sessions of small group supervision

These offerings held 6-12 months after the retreat, support integration and confidence in teaching.

4. Completion

Letters of completion are issued at each stage. Upon completion of the full development pathway, participants are eligible to be listed on the IMP/Relational Mindfulness Collaborative website.

Who is this training for?

The IMP Teacher Training is designed for experienced mindfulness teachers, particularly those trained in MBSR, MBCT, or equivalent experiences who wish to deepen their relational practice and capacity to teach the Interpersonal Mindfulness Program.


What are the prerequisites?

Prerequisites include a regular personal meditation practice, participation in silent and Insight Dialogue retreats, completion of an 8-week IMP course, and professional training and teaching experience in MBSR/MBCT or an approved equivalent. Some requirements may be completed after acceptance, prior to offering IMP.


Is the training residential?

Yes. The core training includes an in-person residential retreat. The next training will be held in the United Kingdom October 21-30, 2027.


How long is the in-person training?

The in-person component last 9 days and includes an opening evening followed by approximately 2.5 days of silent retreat. As the silent retreat phase concludes, participants will deepen their understanding of the meditation guidelines and cultivate teaching presence through interactive small-group exercises.

Can I teach IMP immediately after the retreat?

Yes. Participants are invited to attend a two-day live online Seminar and eight sessions of contiguous small group supervision, offered 6-12 months after the in-person training.


The Seminar and supervision are strongly recommended as part of the full development pathway and support integration, confidence, and teaching readiness.


You will receive letters of completion at each stage of the training. Upon completing the full development pathway, you are eligible to have your name and courses listed on the IMP/Relational Mindfulness Collaborative website.


If participants have completed all required prerequisites for taking the Training they may offer the IMP course. They are encouraged to participate in the 2-day online Seminar and eight sessions of small group supervision.

Overview & Learning Pathway

The Interpersonal Mindfulness Program (IMP) Teacher Training is a comprehensive development pathway consisting of four interconnected stages:

  1. Preparation – Meeting the prerequisites

  2. Engagement – Nine days of immersive, in-person cultivation

  3. Support and Continuity – Deepening practice through supervision

  4. Completion of the Development Pathway

Below you will find detailed information outlining the expectations and learning opportunities within each stage.

1. Preparation

Prerequisites for the Training

Participants are expected to meet the following prerequisites prior to offering IMP:

  • A regular personal silent meditation practice

  • Participation in at least one 5–10 day silent, in-person, teacher-led retreat

  • Participation in at least two 5–7 day in-person Insight Dialogue retreats

  • Completion of an 8-week IMP course (preferably in one’s native language)

  • Professional training as a teacher of MBSR or MBCT

    • Other professional training backgrounds may be considered on a case-by-case basis

  • Experience teaching at least four cycles of MBSR/MBCT, or an approved equivalent (considered on a case-by-case basis)

Most participants will have fulfilled these prerequisites. In some cases, participants may have one or two requirements remaining due to their circumstances. These prerequisites must be completed before beginning to offer the Interpersonal Mindfulness Program.

2. Engagement

The next in-person training will happen October 21- 30, 2027 at Ammerdown, in the United Kingdom where participants will gather to practice and learn together.

  • The first evening is dedicated to arriving, orienting, and getting to know one another.

  • The following 2.5 days are spent engaging with the program in a silent retreat environment.

  • As the silent retreat phase concludes, participants will deepen their understanding of the meditation guidelines and cultivate teaching presence through interactive small-group exercises.

  • At the close of the Training participants are invited to join a website for IMP Teachers where they can access resources in digital form. 

3. Support, Continuity, and Deepening

Following the in-person teacher training, participants are invited to continue their learning through the following offerings:

Ongoing Learning Components

• A two-day online Seminar

• Eight sessions of small group supervision (1.5-2 hours each)

The two-day online Seminar, offered live and led by an IMP teacher, provides an opportunity to refine understanding, develop skills, and build teaching confidence alongside fellow training participants. Also, participants may attend future seminars to refresh their skills. 

In addition, participants are invited to join eight sessions of live, online small group supervision. These sessions support integration, reflection, and continued development as an IMP teacher. 

Both the Seminar and small group supervision are offered 6–12 months after the in-person training.

4. Completion of the Development Pathway

letter of completion will be issued upon the successful completion of each stage of the training. Participants are asked to collect and retain these letters.

After completing the Seminar and Supervision participants are eligible to have their names and courses listed on the IMP/Relational Mindfulness Collaborative website.
